Saturday, June 12th Pulling Anchor in Atlanta.
Our journey has officially begunÖweíre currently rolling thru NC on our way to the first night stay as we creep up to Rehobeth for the start of the trip on Monday morning. Itís almost 11:30 pm ..and we are still going strong. These last few days weíve been running on adreneline mostly. Brian has stayed up til 2 and 3 am working on maps , the database and other technical aspects of preparing for the trip. All this and training on the bike, too.
The last few days have just blurred together, starting Sunday, June 6th with our bon voyage bbq where about 60 of our friends and neighbors gathered. We celebrated the ride by carbo loading, tourning the RV, and guessing how many plates of food Brian would consumeÖ
Many friends brought to the party, copies of the recently published, full-page article in the Atlanta Jewish Times, a beautifully written piece with a really nice photo. The article generated many letters, donations and phone calls, including a call from a friend, Lynn Borsuk, who is on the board of a non profit group, Project Interconnections that builds permanent housing for mentally ill people in Atlanta. She invited us to a fundraiser hosted by Former First Lady Rosalyn Carter and First Lady of Georgia, Marie Barnes.
I really wanted to meet Ms. Carter, thank her for her work on behalf of the mentally ill and mention the bicycle ride to her. As I entered the event, Lynn graciously greeted and introduced me to several people, and as luck would have it, as Ms. Carter walked in, she immediately gravitated to the group with whom I was chatting. It was thrilling to meet her.
